🌋 Etna expert guide
🌿 Real volcanic experience
Lava fields, woodlands and craters: discover the authentic side of Mount Etna
If you’re planning your holiday in Taormina and looking for a truly authentic experience, a Mount Etna tour is one of the most exciting things to do in Sicily.
Just a short drive from Taormina and Giardini Naxos, the highest active volcano in Europe rises 3,403 metres above sea level, dominating the eastern coast and shaping a dramatic landscape between the Ionian Sea and the Sicilian countryside.
During the tour, we’ll explore ancient woodlands, dramatic lava flows and fascinating volcanic caves, entering them with helmets and torches to uncover how they were formed.
Among the Mount Etna tours departing from Taormina, this experience is perfect for families, couples and groups of friends looking for a safe and unforgettable adventure.
An itinerary that reveals the true spirit of Mount Etna
Our Mount Etna tour from Taormina includes pick-up from Taormina, Letojanni, Giardini Naxos and surrounding areas (other locations available on request). Around 8:30/9:00 am, our guide will collect you directly from your accommodation.
The 45-minute transfer by jeep or minivan takes us to the north-eastern slopes of Mount Etna, passing through the villages of Piedimonte and Linguaglossa. We’ll stop at a mountain chalet (Clan dei Ragazzi) for a short break and provide trekking shoes free of charge for anyone who needs them.
Our first stop takes us to the site of the famous 2002 eruption, which reshaped Piano Provenzana and part of the Ragabo Pine Forest. From here, we continue through woodland trails, across lava fields and up towards the lateral craters.
Along quieter, less crowded paths, we’ll reach the panoramic Sartorius Craters — one of the most spectacular viewpoints on Mount Etna and the perfect spot for unforgettable photos.
Our final stop is the remarkable Grotta dei Ladroni, a lava tunnel we’ll explore with helmets and torches to uncover its history and geological formation.
1 - Arrival at the Etna Chalet
After around 45 minutes’ drive from Taormina, we’ll arrive at the chalet for a 30-minute break. Using a map of Mount Etna, we’ll introduce the Etna Park and the key areas we’ll explore throughout the day. We’ll also provide trekking shoes free of charge if needed.
2 - The 2002 Eruption
Leaving the chalet, we’ll visit the site of the 2002 eruption, which reshaped parts of Piano Provenzana and the Ragabo Pine Forest. Here, we’ll share the story of the lava flow and stop for photos.
3 - Volcanic Cave
We’ll enter a lava flow cave to explore its formation and history, experiencing the volcano from the inside and discovering one of its most fascinating features.
4 - Sartorius Crater Trek
Following quieter trails, we’ll reach the Sartorius Craters, a group of around five lateral craters. From here, you’ll enjoy spectacular views over the Ionian coastline — one of the most scenic and photogenic moments of the day.
5 - Lunch at the Chalet
After the hike, we’ll stop for lunch at the Chalet Clan dei Ragazzi (1,500 m). You can choose between a €10 menu with a sandwich of your choice, a drink (water, Coca-Cola, wine or beer) and dessert, or a €15 menu including bruschetta, a first course, a drink and coffee.
